Learning the Craft in Vegas
Where Boxing History and Hard Work Shared the Same Ring
Jay’s time training in that environment gave him an opportunity to experience the culture of professional boxing firsthand. There were no shortcuts to becoming a better fighter. Progress came one round, one drill, and one lesson at a time—from heavy-bag work and conditioning to sparring and learning from the fighters and trainers around you.
Those experiences also placed Jay within an environment connected to some of the greatest chapters in boxing history. Muhammad Ali was among the legendary fighters associated with Johnny Tocco’s gym, and Jay has reflected publicly on what it meant to train in a place—and step into a ring—with that kind of history behind it.
But the significance of those years goes beyond famous names.
For Jay Dehmalo, boxing was never something that could be learned simply by watching from the outside. It was a craft built through repetition, conditioning, sparring, observation, and countless hours spent in the gym. One of the environments that became part of Jay’s boxing journey was the legendary Johnny Tocco’s Ringside Gym in Las Vegas, a place deeply woven into the history of professional boxing.
Founded by boxing trainer Johnny Tocco, the old-school Las Vegas gym became known as a training ground for generations of fighters. Over its long history, the gym was associated with some of boxing’s most recognizable names and represented an era when fighters came to the gym for one reason: to work.
Being surrounded by serious fighters reinforced lessons Jay would carry with him throughout his own professional boxing career and, eventually, into decades of coaching and mentoring others: talent matters, but preparation matters more. Discipline has to become a habit. And there is no substitute for putting in the work when nobody is watching.
For Jay, places like Johnny Tocco’s represented what boxing was really about—the sounds of gloves hitting heavy bags, rounds measured by the bell, fighters pushing one another through exhaustion, and knowledge being passed from one generation to the next.
Decades later, those lessons remain an important part of the philosophy Jay brings to boxing as a coach and mentor.
“The gym teaches lessons long before the bell ever rings.”
– Jay Dehmalo
CONTINUING THE JOURNEY
The Bell Has Never Really Stopped Ringing
For Jay Dehmalo, boxing has never been something that simply belonged to one chapter of his life. His role in the sport may have changed over the years—from professional boxer and sparring partner to trainer, coach, and mentor—but the lessons learned inside the ring have remained with him throughout the journey.
Decades of experience have given Jay a perspective on boxing that extends far beyond punches, combinations, and competition. He understands the preparation that happens before anyone steps through the ropes, the discipline required when no one is watching, and the resilience it takes to keep moving forward when things do not go according to plan.
Today, some of the greatest value of that experience comes from being able to pass it forward.
As a boxing coach and mentor, Jay has had the opportunity to share lessons accumulated through years of training, competing, sparring, and working around accomplished fighters. Technique can be taught, but Jay believes some of boxing’s most important lessons go much deeper—discipline, confidence, accountability, patience, perseverance, and respect.
Those are lessons that remain valuable long after the final bell.
More Than Wins and Losses
A boxing career can be recorded in numbers. Wins. Losses. Rounds. Years.
But numbers rarely tell the entire story.
A lifetime in boxing is also measured by the lessons learned along the way, the relationships built inside and outside the gym, the people influenced, and the knowledge passed from one generation to the next.
For Jay, that continuing connection to the sport may ultimately be one of the most meaningful parts of the journey.
The fighter gains experience.
The coach shares it.
And the next generation carries it forward.
Lessons learned.
Relationships built.
People influenced.
Knowledge passed forward.
The roles may change. The years may pass. But for those who have truly made boxing part of their lives, the bell never really stops ringing.
